MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 5. oldal ANNUAL MEETING OF THE EASTERN CLASSIS The Eastern Classis of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America held its annual meeting on Sunday March 2nd at the Magyar Reformed Church of Perth Amboy, N.J. at 3:00 p.m. The opening devotional was led by the host pastor and Dean of the Eastern Classis the Rev. Stefan M Torok. Greetings were extended to the Assembly by the Vice President of the congregation, Mr. Robert Zambo. Registration was held from 2:30 p.m. with the members of the host church, which also provided refreshments at the opening of the meeting. The roll call indicated the following officers in attendance: Dean Torok, Chief Elder, Mr. Balint Balogh. Secretaries, Rev. Imre Bertalan and Miss Priscilla Hunyady, Commissioners to the General Assembly, Rev. Dezső Abraham and Mr. Robert Zambo, members of the Judicial Commission, Rev. Barnabas Roczey, Rev. Peter Toth and Mr. Gabe Csapó. With great sorrow the Assembly acknowledged the passing of Rt. Rev. Dr. Andrew Harsanyi, Dean Emeritus during the year and a minute of silent prayers were offered in gratitude for his life. Official delegates from the congregations were as follows: Bethlehem, PA. Rev. Ronald Hari pastor, and Mr. Robert Csizma Chief Elder, Carteret, N.J. Rev. Peter Toth pastor and Mrs. Pearl Hatten in the absence of the Chief Elder Mr. Sendelsky who arrived later and was named official delegate, Linden, N.J. Miss Priscilla Hunyady, Perth Amboy, N.J. Mr. Robert Zambo in the absence of the Chief Elder Mr. Kim Latkovich who arrived later and was named official delegate, Roebling, N.J. Rev. Edwin Stern pastor and Mr. Allen Birkholz Chief Elder, Trenton, N.J. the Rt. Rev. Dezső Abraham supply pastor and Mr. Gabe Csapó Chief Elder. No delegates were in attendance from Dallas and Houston, Texas, and Miami, Florida. Dean Torok declared the 1997 Annual Assembly of the Classis fully constituted. A motion made by the assembly and supported by the members declared all in attendance as corresponding members. Special greetings were extended to the assembly by: the Rt. Rev. Alexander Forro, Bishop, Mr. Stephen Szabó, Chief Elder of the Synod, in the form of a letter written by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz, Bishop of the Calvin Synod, Mr. Leslie Martin in behalf of the American Hungarian Presbyter’s Association as president, Mrs. Helen Dodge area Vice President of the American Hungarian Presbyter’s Association, The Rev. August Molnár in behalf of the Hungarian Studies Foundation. Dean Torok introduced and extended a right hand of fellowship to the student in care of the Classis, namely Rev. Peter Lakatos from Erdély, Rev. Arpad Edes from Hungary both presently studying at Princeton and to the Rev. Csilla Lucskai- Spelda from Slovakia, presently studying at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. Dean Torok, also shared with the assembly the joyous news, that Mr. Leslie Martin an elder from our sister church in Trenton will be entering the Seminary this fall. The assembly encouraged him in this decision. The minutes of the 1996 Assembly was acknowledged and accepted without reading since it has been distributed and made available in advance to the meeting. During the reading of the dean’s report, each congregation was requested to update us with the newest information. Each congregation present took advantage of this opportunity, and at the end we not only shared fellowship but received a full picture of what, when and how the life of our members congregations are progressing. Mr. Balint Balogh expressed his thanks to the Dean for a comprehensive report. A motion moved the report of the Dean for further deliberations into the appointed committees.
