6. oldal MAGYAR EGYHÁZ MEETING OF THE EASTERN CLASSIS The Annual Assembly of the Eastern Classis of the Hungarian Church in America was held on Sunday, March 3rd at the Hungarian Reformed Church of Carteret, New Jersey. The opening devotions were offered by the host pastor of the congregation, the Reverend Peter Toth. Following the devotion greetings were extended to the Assembly by the Chief Elder of the host congregation, Mr. Leonard Sendelsky, and host pastor the Rev. Peter Toth. Registration began at 2:30 p.m., and the meeting was called to order by the Dean of the Eastern Classis, the Rev. Stefan M. Torok and Chief Elder, Mr. Balint Balogh. The Dean extended a warm welcome to everyone in attendance and instructed the former Ecclesiastical Secretary of the Classis, the Rev. Edwin Stern, to take the roll call of the official delegates. The following members were present: Rev. Stefan M. Torok, Dean, Mr. Balint Balogh, Chief Elder of the Classis, Mr. Andrew C. Lovász, Treasurer, the Rt. Rev. Dezső Abraham, Commissioner to the General Assembly, Judicial Commission Members of the Classis: Rev. Barnabas Roczey, Rev. Ambrus Batiz, Rev. Peter Toth, and Mr. Gabrial Csapó. The Dean also requested the congregations to inform us of the official delegates from the congregations, which were as follows: Bethlehem, Pa., the Rev. Ronald Hari Pastor and Mr. Robert Csizma newly elected Chief Elder, Carteret, NJ the Rev. Peter Toth, Pastor, and Mr. Leonard Sendelsky, Chief Elder, Linden, NJ., the Rev. Ambrus Batiz, Pastor and Mr. James Toth, Perth Amboy, NJ., the Rev. Stefan M. Torok, Pastor, and Mr. Kim Latkovich, newly elected Chief Elder, Roebling, NJ., the Rev. Edwin Stern, Pastor, Mr. Allen Birkholz, Trenton, NJ., the Rev. Tamas Karla, Pastor, and Mr. Gabriel Csapó, newly elected First Vice Chief Elder. The following churches had no representation: Dallas, Tx., Houston, Tx., Miami, FL, and Washington, D.C. The Dean established a quorum and the meeting was declared open. The Dean also requested a motion to seat all in attendance as corresponding members of the Assembly. About 56 members were in attendance from the various congregations and guests. Greetings were extended by the following: The Rev. Alexander Forro, Bishop of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America, Mr. Stephen Szabó, Chief Elder of the Synod, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz, Bishop of the Calvin Synod of the United Church of Christ, greeted us in the form of a letter since he had an official business meeting in Florida, and Rev. Zoltán Kelemen, student at the Princeton Theological Seminary from Hungary. The minutes of the 1995 Assembly were read by the Rev. Edwin Stern. Both Classis secretaries were out of the country. Miss Priscilla Hunyady was working as a consultant to the American Banking systems in Hungary, and the Rev. Imre Bertalan was attending the meeting of the Hungarian World Association in Hungary. All proceedings at the meeting were recorded. The Assembly was presented with the Dean’s report which was distributed in writing to the members in English and Hungarian. The Dean not only read the report but also gave opportunity to the delegates to contribute observations of the newest developments of the life of the individual congregations. All represented congregations took this opportunity. The written report of the Dean was motioned to be added to the minutes of the meeting. The Assembly gathering continued with the report of the Chief Elder, Mr. Balint Balogh, who reported on his personal visits to the congregations and participation of the Annual Presbyter’s Association meeting in Ligonier, Pa. The report of the Chief Elder was also motioned to be part of the minutes of the meeting. The Assembly also heard the report of the Treasurer. The report of the Treasurer was submitted to the Finance Committee. The Dean appointed the following Committees: Nominating, Recommendation, and Finance Committee. A recess followed when the Committees worked on the subjects before them. Returning from the recess/work period, first the Nominating Committee made its report. The work of the Nominating
