It is a fine scoutlike task to study the soul, the beauties, economical values and life of your country. In a highly cultured country like Hungary, scouts cannot find the wild romance British boys find in the colonies or Americans in the Wild West. But there is culture, beauty and life in the fatherland and they have to study that instead. And this is a fine and useful national task. The Hungarian scout has a very deep sentiment towards his fatherland and he loves his country because he knows it. When camping they try to appropiate all what is fine in their own land. And on sunny, „Árvalányhaj“ decorated Puszta they are searching the same thing as in the cool waves of the Balaton : how is this country connected with the national life. Perhaps, not all the boy scouts of the world have the same aim and not all are so fond to study the real life of their own fatherland as the Hungarian scouts are. But Hungarians are very unhappy ; have no friends, and are still, a nation that wants to face all storms, and the necessity therefore is double, that each of its boys should love, know and understand the soul and soil of their country. To understand the mother country all the better, the programmes of the meetings often contain talks or debates on divers problems of Hungarian history Scouts are anxious to keep alive the memory of our national heroes who rank from defendants of the Christian faith against the Turkish hords of the middle ages as well as men of science or social reformers of more recent times. They are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the boys. Themes for such debates are : The role of Hungary in European History. European nations ethnografically related to us and what we should know of them. The life of Hungarian emigrants in America. The life of Hungarian youth during the Turkish Wars. The questions of modern Hungarian History. Heroes and great figures of our past, and how to follow their intentions and live up according to them. A favourite with our boys is the great pioneer in the modern exploration of Tibet, the Hungarian A. Körösi Csorna, who wrote the first dictionary and grammar of the thibetan language (a beautiful memorial was erected on his grave at Darjeeling by the English). It may be we are more patriotical than other nations, but few nations have seen so much adversity during their existence then Hungary has. The Árvalányhaj, the grass of the puszta on our hats is an emblem of somewhat melancholy feelings. But nothing melancholy is in our eyes beneath. The tomb of a „székely“ bride.
