38 SUMMARY TRADITION AND MODERNITY: ON THE PERSPECTIVE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LIBRARY OF THE ACADEMY Setting out from the process of specialization and integration of scientific disciplines, the study analyses their effect on library- and scientific information work. Strong specialization involves being tied to given research programmes, which is characteristic of the specialized branch libraries. The general scientific library has to follow the literature of the border areas of research or the emergence of new disciplines. In this way, in principle, within the network of the Academy, the central library and the libraries of the research institutes function as a unit. The central library has to develop strongly a function that gives rise to research needs. At the same time, as a large, historically developed traditional library, it must, in its services, combine the tasks of collection and preservation with modernization emerging from scientific development. The study speaks in this context of the new library building planned opposite the palace of the Academy, and surveys the foci of evolution and further development of the Library in the past 140 years. 1. Where does the Library of the Academy stand at present (stock, scope of collection, utilization, information, publications). 2. Trends of the perspective development of the Library of the Academy. This chapter discusses in some detail the resolution of the Presidium on the establishment of a new library building. The functioning of the Library has come into conflict with its housing. In perspective development the following functions have to be reckoned with: — national special library function (built on the historically developed collections), — exchange of publication centre, — centre for the library network of research institutes, — micro-film service, — scientific information centre, — documentation of research management, — central collection of manuscripts, — archives of Academy. The study analyses the potential development of these functions within the scope of the planned new building, demonstrating the contribution of Hungarian culture to world culture, and vice versa, the extent to which Hungary adopted the scientific and cultural achievements of the world as expressed in publications.
