348 It is an open question whether the series mentioned here contain the 28 county maps which were purchased by KORABINSZKY from the widow of MIKOVINY. Perhaps they are identical with the series signed with "S.P." ("Suum Proprium") . Investigating this problem, I have found that, among the eight maps signed with "S.P." in the possession of the Hungarian National Library (Országos Széchenyi Könyvtár) only two are not enumerated in the list dressed by KORABINSZKY, concerning the maps which he purchased from the widow of MIKOVINY. It can be stated that MIKOVINY worked on the maps of at least 52 Hungarian counties.lt is probable that in addition to this he had a hand in the map of the County Zala; but the latter is still missing. Finally, it can be considered as a proven fact that MIKOVINY himself and the engineers employed by him had prepared till the death of the Master of Hungarian cartography, at least 120 to 140 county maps in original and in duplicates. On the basis of this achievement, Samuel MIKOVINY is to be considered as the topmost representative of Hungarian cartography in the 18th century. In his celebrated works "Epistola" and "Monitio" he laid down the principles of a modern scientific cartography and in this way he became, in Central Europe, the initiator of a new epoch in cartography.
