- IX PREFACE This fascicle forms an additional part of the work entitled: "Vocabularium abbreviaturarum bibliothecarii" . The first part contains the abbreviations of the names of public or private literary, artistic and public relational organisations, given by a common alphabet. In case of deficiencies of the above material, we ask our readers to consult the nrs. 1-H., 7-8. of our vocabulary, in which there are also items concerning abbreviations given in the present volume (e.g. abbreviations of tne names of state organisations and institutions, public relations offices, publishing houses etc.). This present fascicle of our vocabulary is completed by a supplement, supplying the reader with the abbreviations of cca. 10 000 often cited handbooks, periodicals, norm lists or prescribed titles and headings having become permanent. In this respect I aimed at the greatest possible completeness concerning the old material;l assumed,namely , that big libraries - when collecting such material - purchase mainly the newly published directories on this field, so the earlier material of abbreviations may sink into oblivion, or irretrievably lost. I refer here only to the devastations of the second world war, during which a high proportion of such publications was destroyed in many countries of the world. So, the main objective of this supplement is to preserve for posterity the old abbreviations of the titles of handbooks, periodicals, norm lists etc. This book is the result of many years' collecting and processing work. In compiling it we used first of all the national and international collections of abbreviations of periodicals and printed catalogues of the largest libraries, but we also made use of different special publications and monographs. In collecting the material we aimed at completeness concerning the subject matter in question and we took into account the abbreviations of some 30 languages. Our work being destined for use of librarians and as a documentation, we had to look for material also from the past, though this part of our compilation,could not be as systematic as that of the living material, except the supplement. As regards the method of treatment of the processing material the abbreviations are followed by full names and wherever it was practicable, the residence or country of the institution and the letter symbol of the language the abbreviation comes from. Frequently occurring names of towns of residence are abbreviated too. In agreement with the practice of international dictionaries of abbreviations, in writing out sigla of Roman characters, with the exception of particles the initials of every
