Mitja Guštin: Between the Slavs and the Madyars

Between the Slavs and the Madyars 251 lement at Felsőzsolca-Várdomb (House 1) (TAKÁCS 2003, Taf. 6.2). To present the site of Zatak, we chose a characteristic ground-plan with a specific position of two hearths together with the contents of two pits (Fig. 3) as well as the characteristic wheel-thrown pottery with incisions and roulette decoration from Pits 32 and 522 with the coin of Albrecht I (12821298). The house as well as the pottery illustrate well the specific material culture of the inhabitants in the area and date the above-mentioned remains to the late period of the Árpád dynasty (895-1301). Archaeological research has also been conducted on the other side of the border, in Hungary, also on the route of the future highway. In the area between Nagykanizsa and Tornyiszentmiklós, the research yielded material that binds this area and a wider area of the Ledava/Lendva basin into a relatively clearly recognizable settlement pattern. The pottery uncovered in the area enables the identification of a formally and decoratively related and contemporary material culture in this area (KVASSAY 2003; 2004). The beginnings of some of them are dated to the time of the Árpádian period (VALTER 2005). The above-mentioned series of settlements from the surroundings of Lendava offers good data for understanding the genesis of the area and speaks, through material evidence of settlement structures and portable material (Figs. 2-3), of the relationship between the settlement and the landscape that later became a constituent part of the Hungarian border and defence zone, called „gyepű elve" in the Hungarian language (KERMAN 1997a, 1997b). This settlement pattern can be particularly well observed in the site of Gornje njive near Dolga vas. The excavations there, conducted by Branko Kerman in the spring of 2006, have uncovered a compact settlement, which corresponds chronologically to the construction of the near-by castle at Lendava (Lindva), owned by the Hahold, later Bánffy, family (STOPÁR 1997) as well as the development of the market-town (Alsólindva) beneath the castle in the 14 th century (ZELKO 1982).
