JANEZ DULAR: COPPER AGE HIGHLAND SETTLEMENTS IN CENTRAL SLOVENIA highlands. Each type of settlement was first registered during the topographic survey of Bela krajina DULAR 1985, 42 ff.). What the relations were between those settlements situated in the lowlands and those situated in the highlands is difficult to ascertain at the moment. Considering that at least a few of the settlements were inhabited at the same time, that is during the Late Neolithic as well as during the Eneolithic era, the credibility of the settlement model established for Bela krajina by M. Budja is thus rendered debatable (BUDJA 1989, 83 ff.). His model presents the change in settlement standards at the transition between the Neolithic and the Eneolithic eras. The Eneolithic population was supposedly compelled to settle in less fertile areas due to excessive exploitation of the soil as well as a demographic explosion (BUDJA 1989, 96). Late Neolithic highland settlements situated in areas that are inadequate for agriculture contradict such explanations. Even P. Mason's attempt to justify the advent of highland settlements with the transhumant method of animal husbandry unfortunately remains merely at the level of speculation (MASON 1994,194). It can thus be concluded that the current stance of investigations just does not yet permit such analyses.
