Archaeological research in Northwest Romania The Early Mediaeval settlement from Nu§falau/ Szilágy nagyfalu-Tigoiul lui Benedek (Sälaj county) Dan Bacuet-Cri§an The site is placed on the left bank of Barcäu River, between two villages: Nu§faläu/ Szilágynagyfalu and Zauan/Szilágyzovány (PI. I: 3A). The first archaeological exploration of the settlement occurred in 1978 (MATEI 1979, 481-482), which was continued and extended in 2001 (BÄCUET-CRISAN 2002, 218-219). The research from 1978 The description of the excavation In 1978, AI. V. Matei made the first excavation of the site, excavating two trenches: the first -Sl/1978: 34x1 m, and the second - Cl/1978: 5x5 m (MATEI 1979,481^182; STANCIU 2000, 157). Unfortunately, in Sl/1978 no artefacts were found. In Cl/1978, placed on the east side of the trench Sl/1978, at-0.80 m depth the traces of an oven were found. The baking surface had a diameter of 0.95-1.05 m and it was burnt out to red, and had a 2-3 cm thick plastering. Over this there were fragments of stones from the oven walls (PI. II). The artefacts (PI. Ill) The following pottery has been found and identified in the oven: cooking pots (without handles), jugs and bell shaped baking devices. Cooking pots (without handles) The pottery fragments are from vessels made either by hand or on a slow or fast wheel. Handmade gritty pottery. Only a few, brown and brick-red or dark-brown fragments without decoration were found. Slow wheel-made gritty pottery. The pottery fragments are brown and brick-red, with black spots. The ornaments are bands of straight lines or wavy lines. Fast wheel-made gritty pottery sometimes tempered also with fine sand. This category was found in the largest number at the site. The fragments have brown and brick-red shades. The ornaments are bands of straight and/or wavy lines. There are also gritty pottery fragments sometimes tempered also with fine sand, made from yellow clay, with strong traces of wheeling on the exterior surface (PI. Ill: 2, 14-15). One of these fragments is ornamented with very fine incised straight lines (PI. Ill: 2). NyJAME XLVI. 2004. 117-135.
