Régészet - Dan Băcueţ-Crişan: Archaeological research in Northwest Romania. The Early Mediavel settlement from Nuşfalău/Szilágynagyfalu–Ţigoiul lui Benedek (Sălaj county)
Dan Bäcuet-Cn§an Jugs There are two interesting gritty pottery fragments, from two different pots. One of them is a part from a vessel with a long neck and a narrow lip. Because of the small sizes of the pottery fragments, we cannot determine whether the two vessels had handles or not. The pottery fragments are yellowish red and yellowish red with grey spots. The first pottery fragment has traces of fast wheeling on the exterior surface, which is a type of decoration (PI. Ill: 1). The second fragment is decorated with band of very finely incised straight lines (PI. Ill: 13). Next to this, there was found another brick-red and grey fragment tempered with very fine sand (PI. Ill: 12) from a vessel made on fast wheel. Bell shaped baking devices Only two gritty hand-made brownish brick-red and yellowish brick-red fragments were found. The research from 2001 The description of the excavation The excavations continued in 2001 (BÄCUET-CRISAN 2002, 218-219), when four trenches were excavated: Sl/2001, S2/2001, S3/2001 and S4/2001. The stratigraphy of the four trenches is as follows: humus, brown-black level, black level (which contained Early Mediaeval artefacts), black clay level (without any artefacts) and yellowbrown clay level (archaeologically speaking - sterile). Trench Sl/2001 . In this trench no artefacts were found. Trench S2/2001 . 7-10 m from the beginning of the trench, at -0.56 m depth three postholes were found. They were probably a part of a dwelling. In the postholes and their surrounding several Early Mediaeval pottery fragments were found. Trench S3/2001. In this trench a dwelling was found: feature Ll/2001. Trench S4/2001 . In this trench, the rest of the dwelling Ll/2001 was explored and between -6-10 m another dwelling, feature L2/2001 was found. Dwelling Ll/2001 (subterranean dwelling). The dwelling had a rectangular shape (PI. IV). It was outlined in trench S3/2001, at -0.35 m depth. The floor of the dwelling was found at -0.60 m depth. In the trench S4/2001, dwelling Ll/2001 was outlined at -0.35 m depth, and the floor at -0.95 m. The heating/ baking system of the dwelling consists of three ovens: the first one was dug into the dwelling's wall (oven 3), the second one into a clay-block (oven 2) and the third one was made of river-stone (oven 1). It is obvious that the ovens were not used at the same time. At first only the one made of riverstone was used (oven 1), being eliminated later, after the other two ovens were built (oven 2 and 3). Dwelling L2/2001 (surface dwelling). The dwelling (PI. VIII) was outlined between 6-10 m, at the depth of-0.40 m, characterised by the concentration of stones, bones, pottery fragments and burned clay. The floor of the dwelling was reached at -0.48 m depth. The shape of the dwelling could not be established precisely.
