Hárs Éva: Martyn Ferenc életmű katalógusa, 1985

INTRODUCTION The catalogue of Ferenc Martyn's oeuvre is the first one in Hungarian special literature, which was compiled parallel with the artist's works, even in his life. In addition, it has explored—and worked up the data on—the works made prior to cataloguing. The first records go back to 1956, the dead line of entries to catalogue is 1984. Simultaneously with describing the objects d'art, they were photoed steadily. Ferenc Martyn lived in Paris between 1926 and 1939, he could not bring the objects made there home when the second world-war broke out. The author of the catalogue had the possibility to find them out as late as 1964—1968. By working up and photoing those objects she could complete the material of early period of Martyn's activity. They made it possible to understand the most important phase of his career, a phase determining his later activity for decades. They entries are arrenged chronologically with a respect to artistic development. Thus certain grouping can be seen within chronology. Captions consist of the title, the year of origin, the technical data, the size, the name of the owner, a characteristic, short description of the object, and data on exhibitions and publications. Both photos and captions are denoted with the same number. So it is easy to find the data referring to a given picture. Contents and abbreviations are given in English, too, to guide non-Hungarian persons showing an interest in data. FERENC MARTYN was born at Kaposvár in 1899. He spent his childhood in the home of József Rippl-Rónai, the painter, where he got acquainted with art. He attended secondary schools at Pécs, then he went to Budapest and Vienna for his academic years. In 1926 — 1940 he lived in Paris and joined the progressive contemporary circles of artists. In 1945 he came to live at Pécs. Since then up to now he has been participating in national and local affairs of art, and beside his activity he undertook a lot of duties of organizer. He was awarded Munkácsy Prize in 1962, Kossuth Prize in 1974. Merited Artist in 1970, Eminent Artist in 1978. He was presented the freedom of Pécs in 1979. Winner of Order of Labour in 1969 and 1974.
