MAGYARORSZÁG HANGYADARAZSAI - VELVET ANTS OF HUNGARY (MUTILLIDAE) 101 Clypeus with anterior transverse smooth surface and two small tubercles before apex. Mandibles tridentate (Fig. 105). Flagellomere 2 about as long as 3, and about l.5x longer than 1. Head, legs, metasoma and antennae black, base of antennae reddish brown. Ventral side of mesosoma black, pronotum, mesonotum, scutellum and tegulae rusty red, propodeum black. Occasionally entire mesosoma uniformly black. Mesonotum, tegulae and middle of tergite 2 covered by sparse black or greyish brown setae, other parts of body with sparse pale setae forming weak bands on posterior part of metasomal segments, band of pubescence on tergite 2 usually quite dense. Tergite 2 with straight, long felt lines (Fig. 73). Wings transparent (Figs 177 and 179). 6-12 mm. Physetopoda halensis (FABRICIUS, 1787) 14 (13) Ocelli smaller, diameter of anterior ocellus smaller than distance between anterior ocellus and one of posterior ocelli; distance between one of posterior ocelli and compound eye larger than diameter of ocellus. 15 (16) Vertex dome-shaped. Clypeus with medial longitudinal carina. Mandibles tridentate. Flagellomere 2 as long as 3 but much longer than 1. Mesosoma coarsely punctate, shiny. Mesosoma black, except rusty brown pronotum, mesonotum and tegulae, sometimes uniformy red or uniformly black. Head and metasoma black, antennae and legs pitch brown, almost black. Entire body with long sparse erect pale setae forming neither spot nor band of pubescence (Fig. 173). 7-9 mm. Physetopoda cingulata (COSTA, 1858) 16 (15) Vertex not dome-shaped. 17 (18) Pronotum and mesonotum black, scutellum rusty brown, but sometimes black Clypeus weakly convex, with Y-shaped elevation in middle. Mandibles tridentate, two tiny denticles beneath apex hardly visible. Mandibles conspicuously widening from middle toward base. Flagellomere 2 twice as long as 1, and about as long as 3. Occeli quite large. Mesosoma about 1.5x longer than wide. Inner sides of metacoxa and sternite 1 with carina along midline. Uniformly black, except rusty red tegulae, scutellum and tubercles behind antennal base . (Occasionally scutellum also black.) Whole body covered by sparse erect pale setae, not forming characteristic spot or band, except tergites 2 and 3, where weak band of pale setae present on posterior part. Mesothorax and tegulae covered also by sparse appressed darker setae. Wings transparent. Small species (Fig. 181). 6-9 mm. Physetopoda scutellaris (LATREILLE, 1792) 18 (17) Pronotum and mesonotum rusty red. Scutellum black. Clypeus with smooth, shiny, transverse surface, with two denticles before apex, as well as with medial longitudinal carina as long as about 1/3 of clypeus. Mandibles tridentate (Fig. 103). Flagellomere 2 somewhat longer than 3, and about 1.3-1.4x longer than 1. Inner side of metacoxa with carina. Metasomal segment 1 shorter than its maximum width. Sternite 1 with medial longitudinal cari-
