DATA TO LIFE-WORK OF THE EYE-SPECIALIST DR. BÉLA HORVÁTH SUMMARY The authors searched less well-known data about the life-career of Béla Horváth the undeservedly forgotten eye-specialist. The doctor was highly respected already at a very early age and he reached the peak of his career between the two World Wars he became the director of the Eye Clinics in Budapest and then a university professor. Several of his scientific articles were published, he introduced new operational methods and instruments into the cure of eye. After the World War II legal proceedings were taken against him with antiSemitic charges, later he was accused of the groundless charges. He was sent into "exile" from Budapest to Bares in 1948, he was charged with stopping trachoma which spread as an epidemic at that time in the area next to Drava river. He could stop the illness because of his professional competence and human strength. His figure still remains in the memory of the population of Bares, they are going to place a memorial plaque in his former house. 165
