Tracing the pencil point Materials being the the carriers of cultural memories, I have chosen carbon with its two opposite characteristics graphite and diamond to leave behind traces. Carbon, vitally important and differently determined through its grid structure, is dark, soft and opaque as graphite, hard and transparent as diamond. I let both act in their different graphic possibilities. I am aware that „computing with a pencil“ is no longer an utopian notion, Silicon electronics with graphene (graphite platelets only one atom layer thick)* could move miniturization to atomic dimensions, his material graphite, known since antiquity, with its atomic grid structure, multi-layered “honey cones“, will soon become a functioning reality for quantum computers. Our atomic clock is ticking unnoticed. Soon my drawings will indeed remain as TRACES, if they remain at all. *The two physicists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010 for their work in the production and analysis of graphene. 64
