Dr. Márton Kálnoki-Gyöngyssy: Dear Artlover Public

DEAR ARTLOVER PUBLIC, Part of Béla Czóbel’s spiritual bequest is bond to Szentendre. The artist in his fifties was made to stay in this quiet, small town by the Danube. He, who was accustomed to the noisy European cities, formed here his second home beside Paris. He did much for enriching the collection of the Czóbel Museum in Szentendre with precious artworks. His bequest left to the museum and to the town is a responsibility of those, whose task is to take care of its preservation. For this reason, it is of outmost importance that Szentendre is the home for a huge memorial exhibition displaying the career of seven decades, last presented in 1971 in Műcsarnok (Art Hall), Budapest. Since then several of the works staged there got to newer collections, moreover, the possession of some of them is unknown by now. However, numerous hiding works were discovered in the last few decades. Organizing this exhibition by collecting the rich material of paintings and graphic works, amounting to almost two hundred artworks, our purpose was to contribute to the rediscovery of Béla Czóbel’s art. This purpose was understood by many, so we express our great appreciation to the lenders of this exhibition - private collectors, galleries, public collections - for their help in presenting the display.
