FLOODS AND CONTROL OF STREAM IN SALGÓTARJÁN

Many think that Salgótarján is protected from the natural disasters in addition to the subsistence difficulties. But the floods of the streams, particularly the floods of the Tarján Stream, flowing in the valleys of the place caused a lot of harm and even claimed lives. Significant floods damaged Salgótarján in 1873, 1875, 1896, 1924. The periodic floods and the marshy flood area of the stream valley required the control of stream, but those were postponed for decades in spite of the administrative permissions. The controlling works of the Tarján Stream started in 1925. The work was going on when in the May of 1926 after a cloudburst the town had been covered by a flood once more. The flood breaking into the steel factory claimed two lives.

The flood had positive influence. The control stimulated the supply with utilities, had an effect on the development of the street network within the town.
