Abstract The Middle Miocène fossils of Mátraszőlős 1. (a short synopsis) The small village Mátraszőlős is mémorable in the Hungárián geological and paleontological literature because a larg quarry found close to the settlement. This quarry produced Middle Miocène Badenian limestone which is extremely rieh in marine fossils. These finds (corals, sea urchins, molluscs, sharks) were studied by Hungárián scientists from the beginning of this century (SCEPREGHYNÉ -MEZNERICS, 1954, VITÁLIS, 1915, 1942, VADÁSZ, 1915). On the other hand the study of the nonmarine séries (Sajóvölgyi Formation HAMOR, 1985) overlying the above mentioned limestone was completely neglected. The intensive paleontological investigation of the terrestric -limnic séries was initiated by Hir. The best exposures of the formation are found at the dirt road between the village and the „Rákóczi Chapel". In the summer of 1998 a field campaign was organised with students and 1600 kg sédiment was collected from the section of the locality Mátraszőlős 1. The molluscs and the bones were produced by the yellow diatomaceous mud and the green clay at the bottom of the section. The samples were washed by pump and a 0.6 mm fine sieve -System. There are 7 continental éléments among the 19 taxa of the mollusc fauna. The Gyraulus species are the most fréquent. The majority of the herpetofauna needed freshwater environment. The specialities of the avifauna are the questionable darter (aff. Anhinga sp.) and the Northern ducks, which probably were wintering in this area. The species indicate a warmer climate than that of nowadays and a watery paleoenvironment. No adéquat différences between the fauna of the yellow and the green layers. There are new species among the birds and among the insectivors. The biostratigraphic classification is difficult: Middle Miocène, Astaracien, MN 6 or MN 7-8 zones (Badenian or Sarmatian). The investigations are continuing with the study of the Mátraszőlős 2. locality. The complète version of this study with detailed systematic descriptions will be published in the 23 rd volume of the Fólia Historico Naturalia Musei Matraensis (Gyöngyös).
