First World War Prisoner-of-War Theatres in Habarovsk Attila Márfi The study presents one of the valuable written legacies of the City History section of Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs, personal documents associated with the person of dr. Jenő Arató, once a magistrate of Pécs. The rich collection embraces 29 diaiy volumes, chronicles, essays on local history, sizeable biographical writings, personal and family documents (correspondence, photographs, documentation of his career), extremely valuable documents of the time (newspapers, posters, publications, official documents, sources of the lifestyle of the citizenry) and memorabilia. After a detailed description of all of the above and an outline of the life of Dr. Jenő Arató, we can read of the conditions among the prisoners-of-war in Habarovsk, Siberia through the so-called First World War diaries. Following this the study turns to the creation by the Plungarian, Austrian and German POWs of cultural values, a significant source hitherto unknown m Hungarian theatre history, and of the operation of the prisoners' theatres and theatrical companies. Art-loving amateurs joined with former actors and musicians in these companies, in order to call up through selfmade stages, sets, costumes and scripts what was to them a vital culture and lifestyle left at home. The writing records the more important individuals, actors, performers, the various companies established in different bauacks and their notable wealth of repertoire.
