TISICUM XXV. - TÖRTÉNETI TANULMÁNYOK István Törőcsik The secrets of the temple of Jászapáti The temple of Jászapáti is one of the largest temple of the Eger diocese, which is hardly investigated despite the medieval parts. There are more assumptions than source supported knowledge about the early history of the parish church and the connecting village. Where the village got its name (Jászapáti=Jász abbey)? It could have been an abbey estate, because in 1264 the village of Örs is neighbouring the estate of the abbey of Sár, named Nyésta to the east. It is questionable that during the mass sedentation of the Iranian language Iasi, how can there be a Hungarian toponym in the region and why can’t we find definitely identifiable Iasi to- ponyms in the Jászság. The other possibility is that there was an Árpádian Age abbey under the temple of Jászapáti, but there are no local tradition or data supporting this. But Hild Viktor, the first archaeologist of Jász- Nagykun-Szolnok County, in 1905 found a barrel-vaulted crypt with cloth remains. He thought that in the crypt there were the graves of 12th century Benedictine graves, but the crypt was found on the same place were the sanctum of the 18th century extended temple was. Other circumstances indicate as well that the finds were from the New Age, so there are still no trace of the medieval abbey. The first mentioned in 1391 Jászapáti temple’s predecessor could be a parish church, what - because there are no known temples in the 5 km radius - could stand here already in the 12th or 13th century. The temple was modified in the 18th and 19th century as well, the medieval parts were destroyed in 1493 with the exception of the eastern tower, but in the baroque wall several sculptures can still be found. Not even the plan of the medieval temple can be reconstructed, we don’t even know where the other tower, mentioned in 1700 was located. Finding the answer to these quations is a task for future research. 390
