Tisicum XVIII. Annabella Geese Labour and unemployment at the value system of a community This paper tries to draw attention to the concept and changes of labour by analysing the schedule of labour of a settlement. It concentrates on those events of the 20th century that formed the concept of labour, emphasising the first half with data, and describing the problems of the second half. Primarily it follows the guidelines outlined in the articles of László Szabó, and his definition of labour in context of social ethnography. Where did the role and place of labour go in the system of values, while Hungary and its neighbours were building socialism? How much did “socialist work ethic’’ root in the inherited attitude of first generation industrial workers whose fathers were farmers? The role and attitude of those people who did not work as farmers previously make the question more complicated. Can the period between 1950 and 1990 be viewed from the labour standpoint as the continuation of the work ethic of the people who were brought up in the previous order? What has happened to unemployment over the past 20-25 years? The paper attempts to answer these questions. 314
