Régészettudomány - - Appendix II - Jacqueline S. Meier - Bronze Age worked animal bones from Zagyvapálfalva-Homokbánya (Northern Hungary)

I Tisicum XIX. Table 2. The taxonomic and anatomical distribution ot animal bones with marks of working or use from Kisterenye. As may be seen in Figure 1, the majority of worked remains at the dominant site of Zagyvapálvalva originate from sheep and/or goat (Caprinae), while pig is better represented at Kisterenye. Cattle bone was worked in smaller numbers, while bones of game are rare in the material. The material is largely comprised of sheep/goat and pig worked astragali and phalanges which give evidence of the high degree of use of these raw materials. The presence of bear phalanges, one of them worked in same manner as the sheep/goat, pig and cattle phalanges shows the variety of species from which the same bone elements were selected to be used with a specific purpose. The selection of raw material can also be connected to the cultural importance of an animal, the species availability and the technology employed in the production of tools. Later work will include comparison with faunal data of other sites in order to determine if the exploitation of the species present in this collection follow the same trends as other sites of the same time period in Hungary. Similarly worn short bones occurred in numbers at the Middle Bronze Age tell settlement of Jászdózsa-Kápolnahalom toward the south. 1 Manufacturing techniques and use wear studies based on experimental studies have contributed greatly to recent worked bone research 2 and this analysis will be used in order to gain further information from this collection. The physical properties of bone, antler and horn will also be investigated in conjunction with tool typology in order to explore the important relationship between natural morphology and tool Figure 2: The percentual distribution of pooled worked bone by species at the sites of Zagyvapálfalva-Homokbánya and Kisterenye-Hársas. shape. 3 Specialized typologies present in the assemblage will be further compared with existing studies, such as Hungarian bone skate studies." Further information on raw material exploitation may be obtained with the comparison of this set of artifacts to non-worked faunal material from 1 CH0YKE, Alice M. 2005,153-155. 2 LEMOINE, Geneviève 2007. 3 OLSEN, Sandra L. 2007. 4 CHOYKE, Alice M. and BARTOSIEWICZ, László 2005. 148
