Contribution to the „Unrobing" of the Matyó
Carpathian basin, and ones that must be found in the local economic and social history of the Matyó region. Visitors to Mezőkövesd took photos of the locals, often they posed in the local traditional costumes themselves, and in doing so, they contributed to the fact that the Matyó folk art became famous all around the world. The well defined rules generated by the community that regulated the dressing code of the various generations and age groups could be well observed in these archive photographs: the occasions when they were different types of clothes, the rich ornaments of special festive occasions, the characteristic features of different age groups can be studied here. In these pictures one can trace the process of leaving traditional costumes behind: in somé lucky cases the social status of the family in the picture can be identified as well. The photos presented here demonstrate the process and characteristic phases of "unrobing", but not necessarily all the stations in strict chronological order. 48
