MAGDOLNA KOKAI COMPLEMENTS TO THE BELIEFS AND CUSTOMS ATTACHED TO BIRTH IN JÁSZAPÁTI In my study with the aid of various sources I attempt to present what factors have influenced the changes of the beliefs and traditions since the 18th century up to these days. The vast majority of these beliefs and customs have sunk intő oblivion with the advent of childbirth in hospitals. Those that have remained mainly cannot be ratíonally influenced. Somé of these are the predíctíon of the sex of the child unborn based on the shape of the mother's belly and other factors, and the notions about longings. Out of the customs attached to the church we can still observe - though sometimes in altered forms - the custom of baptism and churching. Nowadays churching takes place within the baptismal ceremony. The agricultural collectívísm of the Iate 1950's had a negatíve effect on the number of children. The land that could support large families became natíonalísed. Village people víewed their sítuatíon and that of theír children hopeless. 272
