h century. Gárdonyi was continually examining the world he lived in, and reacted to any changes going on within society with an open mind. He was touched by modernism and tried himself to adapt to the ever-changing circumstances he confronted. It was an openness, however, that only ever amounted to a form of introspection. For him innovation was the result of a process of deep and profound personal renewal. His working processes were often experimental in nature, and on more than one occasion his approach proved counter-productive. By 1908, when Nyugat started, Gárdonyi had already managed not only to find his own voice, but to gain a sense of how he could express the way society exerted its influence on the individual.
