For him the contradictions existing within society expressed themselves in personal experience, with the mediation of the human spirit. Although Gárdonyi 's works do not appear in the pages of Nyugat, there are a number of occasions in which his works or his activities as a writer are discussed at some length. His historical novels receive praise for their modernity, and the precision with which his observations are made. Indeed, Gárdonyi's method was considered to be a deliberate literary device. His novellas were also appreciated for their lyricism. The greatest praise he received came from Nyugat's foremost figure Endre Ady: "never has anyone so effortlessly, while relying on such a complex philosophy, and from so elevated a position and with such poetry, managed to narrate as Gárdonyi has done in his latest book". 413
