Júlia Domán The Work and Workshop of József Ocsovai Hatvan Cabinet Maker The workshop of József Ocsovai the Younger (1913-1991) was situated on 23, Zrínyi utca, Hatvan. Its furnishings have remained untouched since the cabinet maker's death. József Ocsovai did his apprenticeship under the furniture-maker Ferenc Csepreghy from 1929 to 1932, before working as an carpentary assistant for Csepreghy, Herman Steiner, János Hirling and Lajos Kurunczy. After qualifying as a cabinet maker in 1939 he was to continue working, with one short break, as an independent craftsman right up to his retirement. He was a member of the Hatvan Trades Council, and then the Hatvan Branch of the National Association of Craftsmen. In addition to making traditional furniture, from the 1950s onwards he also did woodcarving for provost Frigyes Pálos. His work consisted mainly of making fittings for vicarages and liturgical furniture (pews, altars, confessional boxes, crucifixes, candlesticks etc.). His most important works were the provost's chair with its coat-of-arms of 1957, and the St Joseph altar of 1959, which he made for Hatvan parish church. 230
