Csiffáry Gergely: Varkocs Tamás egri várkapitány emlékezete

final military action of note took place at the time of the birth of the independent Principality of Transylvania in 1556 and 1557. Unfortunately the sources remain silent on Varkocs's life and work during the final period of his life between 1563 and 1576. It is likely, that as a man of considerable wealth, work and politics ceased to be so important to him as he enjoyed the incomes of his considerable estates. The second part of the study concentrates on the years 1526-1541, which marked a tempestuous period in the history of Eger Castle. The years between 1526 and 1541 were particularly rich in incident, as the forces of Ferdinand I and John Szapolyai beseiged the castle on no less than nine occasions. It was during this period that work on the modernisation of the castle began. Initially, in 1528, the two bastions of the outer castle were built, before István Csaby built a bastion in 1530 at a time when the castle was firmly in the hands of John Szapolyai. It was Csaby who first planned to cut the castle in half, something which was realised between 1542 and 1548 during Varkocs's castellanship. 260
