tion to settle a court case he was then embroiled in with the archbishopric of Esztergom concerning the validity of his marriage. In order to win the approval of the patriarch bishop Buttler presented Pyrker with the Dobó's tomb cover. Dobó István's tomb cover was moved to the Gothic palace in 1965, being placed in the Hall of Heroes. The last part of the castle ensemble to be put in place was the bell which was probably put into position in 1839. Pyrker' s new castle features were put into use almost immediately. Organised by the Servite Order, a procession from the Servite church to the Stations of the Cross in the castle was organised on every third Sunday of the month between Good Friday and the Michelmas in honour of the Seven Sufferings of the Blessed Virgin Mary. By 1838 two masses a week were said in the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. In 1838 there was an initiative calling for a procession to be held on 20 th August, the feast of St Stephen the King. Both processions continued to be held right until the end of the 1840s. The procession on August 20 th starting from the cathedral church ended in a short prayer at the castle before returning to the church for the Te Deum. This rare type of procession was probably a variation of the processions which were held from 1687 at Buda Castle on the Feast of St Stephen. In 1686, Pope Innocent XI. entered September 2 nd , the Day of Liberation from the Turks, into the Roman missal, as the Feast of St Stephen and St Adalbert. It is for this reason that both feasts, August 20 th and September 2 nd were both connected and celebrated with spectacular processions. It was logical therefore that Pyrker decided that one of the most famous Turkish battle sites should be rewarded with a similar show of pomp and circumstance. 226
