How to Identify the Vegetation of Past Eras? Opportunities for the Reconstruction of the Vegetation

These days the reconstruction of a given periods vegetation has become an integral part of archeological excavations or architectural reconstruction. The required data can be collected by three different methods: archeological research and scientific research, which is built on the former, the analysis of written sources or by using visual sources. Often it is very tempting to use only one of these methods, however it is all three together that can reveal the reality and the different sides of what this past vegetation looked like, therefore the correct information can only be gained through their synthesis.

This presentation uses examples to summarise the potentials and limitations of the various areas.
