Bagi Zoltán Péter: Az 1566. év elfeledett háborúja. Palota sikeres védelme, valamint Veszprém és Tata visszafoglalása

Zoltán Péter Bagi The Forgotten Transdanubian War of 1566 The Successful Defence of Palota, the Recapture of Veszprém and Tata 1566 has been etched into the collective memory of Hungarians as a tragic year by the memory ofMiklós Zrínyi and the heroic defenders of Sziget. However, in spite of the fall of this castle, as well as that of Gyula and the collapse of the Somogy county borderland, Hungarian and German troops led substantial and very successful campaigns in Northern Transdanubia prior to the start of the sultans campaign. The successful defence of Palota, the flight of Arslan, the Pasha of Buda, as well as the recapture of the castles of Veszprém and Tata can be regarded as significant results from a strategic point-of-view. Both castles were wedged into the line of Hungarian fortresses, keeping Transdanubian counties under constant threat. On the Hungarian side, the fall of Szigetvár and Gyula can be viewed as strategic losses, but the same is true for the Ottomans in terms ofVeszprém and Tata. In my study I use previously known and also some new sources, as well as a new interpretation to describe, further clarify and add to the events in Northern Transdanubia during the months ofjune and July 1566. My work has proven that new and further basic research is required, since in many cases experts on the subject fail to go beyond repeating the results of previous summaries, which prevents us from studying these historic events from a different aspect(s).
