Ferenc Tóth TOWN SIEGES IN THE MILITARY DIARY OF CHARLES V DUKE OF LORRAINE The French military diary in the archives of Charles V Duke of Lorraine (ÖStA, Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv, Hausarchiv, Lothringisches Hausarchiv Kt. 50—51) is an extremely rich source for those interested in the Turkish conflict in the years 1683-87. The siege descriptions (Vienna 1683, Buda 1684 and 1686, Belgrade 1687) provide superb examples of the kind of opinions that can be formed by a military expert familiar with the fortification systems and sieges of 17th century western Europe when considering the best means of taking on the Turks. From the descriptions it is possible to gain detailed information about the spread of the most recent western European methods and how they could be adapted to the local conditions. The texts address numerous issues in the fields of Ottoman fortification technology and siegecraft, issues that continue to be the subject of contention even today. Indeed our findings have led us to reassess the military historical phenomenon known as the “military revolution” 160
