This study deals with the problems surrounding the provisioning of Hungary’s castles. During the ló1*1 and 171^ centuries, at a time when the Ottoman forces occupied the central territories of medieval Hungary, the independent state of the Principality of Transylvania came into existence to the east, whilst to the north and west what remained of the Kingdom of Hungary came into the Habsburg Empire’s sphere of influence, being ruled by mon- archs from the Habsburg dynasty. It was here to the north and west that a border defence system was built to prevent any further Ottoman advances. Whilst neighbouring countries and the German states contributed to the development and upkeep of the border fortress system, the task of supplying food to the army was left to the local Hungarian population. The study deals with the Hungarian historiography of military food supply, looking at what was demanded of society when catering for large numbers of people at any one time, and supplying provisions on a more normal regular basis. We look at the questions relating to supply problems, the measures that were taken in overcoming them, as well as the efforts which were made in stamping out corruption. The reform plans entertained by Habsburg officials and Hungarian statesmen are also described, as is the state’s economic performance. A hely szelleméhez méltóan a Végvárrendszer és ellátás tudományos tanácskozást elegendő lenne Dobó István szavaival bevezetni. Tinódi írta le, s a lőporrobbanás után hangzott el: „Hogy bízzunk élésünkbe, sok porunkba, Népinkbe és az mi erős voltunkba. ” Vagyis az „élés ”1, az élelem elsőrangú fontosságú, hogy megtartsák a várat.
