STUDIA AGRIENSIA 20, 1999 Czigány István FELDERÍTÉS ÉS TÉRKÉPEK ABSTRACT: István Czigány: Reconnaissance and Maps. The military changes which took place during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries led to major changes in military conduct at the turn of seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The rapid spread of firearms, their wholesale use, the sudden increase in the number of reservists and the newly found significance of fortifications meant that logistical planning came to the forefront and this in turn demanded a more detailed knowledge of the locality. All these trends can be observed in the territories of the Habsburg Empire, including the defensive line drawn up against the Turks within the Kingdom of Hungary. The Hungary system of border castles was, from the point of view of news gathering, were up-to-date. The mapmakers’ use of information gleaned by the reconnaisance scouts and spies can be said to have been widespread. During the period the lands occupied by the Turks were conquered several dozen military engineers were employed to record and map the fortresses and the land of the reconquered territories. In many cases the land had already been recorded by spies who had operate^ in the territories prior to a successful offensive and it was this data which was recorded in the maps. This was how a detailed map of Northern Serbia and a revised map of the southern Serb and Bulgarian territories were recorded in 1689/90. „Ahhoz, hogy bemutassam Felségednek, milyen módon van kiképezve az erőd (ti.
