Krisztina Kókay pointed out the good relation of the Textile Artists’ Symposium of Kecskemét and the local vocational school of fine art, as a result of which there is, moreover, a huge interest in the works of the symposium. Péter Szendrényi, the deputy head of the Department of Regional Development of the Office of Regional Development of the Prime Minister’s Office outlined the first completed plan of the Office, offering the artists’ symposia an opportunity of co-operation. The moneys provided by the EU have been distributed among 4 structural funds, on which a development worth 1,200- 1,500 billion forints can be realized during 3 years, for further 2 years' duration, in the framework of 5 operative programmes. 18-20 % of the whole money can be appropriated for a regional operative programme (ROP). The ROP contains projects which are carried out according to the development plans of the local governments and the interests of the population. On the one hand, it supports an urban renewal programme such as the revitalization of the square around the big church of Debrecen or the GANZ MÁVAG plant behind Széna tér in Buda, the development of sleazy housing estates on the outskirts as well as the utilization of desolate industrial areas for other purposes, which ensure better conditions of life to those living at a lower standard. The other main area is the improvement of traffic, development of roads and roundabouts. The artists’symposia engaged in sculpture can join in the execution of these projects but to that end the ideas must be developed in advance so as to be included in the following plan. The field connected with a higher level of satisfaction of the tourists’ requirements is a likewise good opportunity of co-operation. Tibor Wehner drew the attention to the dangers which had appeared expressly in Hungary in the last decades and which must be avoided: wealth should not dictate art what to do but it should help the development of culture so that cultural demands and exacting standards may increase. I am afraid, he said, that on these moneys Potemkin towns of the same kind will be built as they were 40 years ago. The development of town meadows is rather a negative example that must be avoided! In Hungarian culture there is not any money planned for visual arts in the state budget, thus it would be good to integrate EU moneys hereto so that programmes of development based on local traditions may be realized by reason of closing-up of economy and culture. Let us think for instance of the museums, which struggle with grave financial difficulties and are unable tu purchase works of art. In the framework of this programme there are giant developments at Esztergom and Vác but they are inorganically built in According to Péter Szendrényi, we must be glad that the EU gives so much support, on such good conditions. The competition system does not enable the support to be included in the central budget. Behind the Union moneys there are much more intelligent aims than what can be experienced in Hungarian 321
