qualifications. However, they were primarily teachers by profession, so their activity can be considered the first example of the close connection between education and the movement of symposia after the war. Győr is also interesting from the point of view of the movement of symposia, he went on, because in this city the antecendents of the local intellectual coopearation, that is the symposium as a method had been available earlier. He mentioned as an example the local activity of the Pattantyús brothers. If we look still further back we can see that the movement of symposia was latent in Hungary from ancient times, continuously, until the epoch of the Hungarian conquest, the foundation of the state when the young Hungarian state wished to play the role of a bridge between the East and the West. Later the Hungarian students went to Paris, where they were taught by Aquinas St Thomas. They then launched a movement that wished to bring back Aristotle’s line. The essence is how existence-space-time, past-present-future are connected in the course of history. According to the tradition, through time, which is one of the main problem areas of art and which is also treated as a basic issue by the movement of symposia. It is today that we wished to announce the foundation of the Artists’ Symposium of Pannonhalma, which is also connected with the sacral past but the ralationship of activism and the movement of symposia is significant alike. When the Association began its operation in 1949 all the artists who were teaching applied the method which had been started by pre-war experimental avant-garde, thus the members of this artistic group also worked on the basis of the method of symposia. That is in the 60s the movement of symposia restarted, where it had had some antecendent before the war. It is important even today, he summed up the lesson of the examples mentioned, to go back to the method of symposia determining the process of teaching and studying in the old teacher-pupil relation. All the regions should be covered by artists’ symposia so that this method can work. There are many tasks but we are not alone, and on top of all that, this has been the most successful form of co-operation for 2500 years, which as regards the activity of those present, will probably get more and more perfect. Júlia N. Mészáros summarized the 35 years of the Artists’ Symposium of Győr, outlining the characteristic creative activity of the single periods, the background and difficulties of the operation, about-turns over the change of political environment, which strongly influenced the topical programme of the artists’ symposium. She demonstrated with numerous examples how harmful it is if the media do not deal with the results of the artists’ symposium or they assess not objevtively but according to political expectations. She pointed to the backlog of the professional evaluation of the work done here, the recent results and the issues to be solved, serving the further development. 317
