ARRABONA 2019. 57. TANULMÁNYOK The Carmelite Church of Győr as a burial-place In the 19th and 20* centuries the only downtown church that could be used for burial purpose by the citizens of Győr was that of the Carmelites. Although laymen could also be buried in this church, which was consecrated in 1725, already in the 18* century, the identities (or rather the names only) some of are known from the book of history of the Carmelite order published in 1897. However, we have a well documented register of the buried persons starting from 1800, but these sources have remained quite neglected by the local historians. However, during a recent documentation of the present state of the crypt these local sources have come to light. One of them is a two-volume topographic register of the crypt (Liber Sepultorum et Sepeliendorum in nostra Krypta) from 1941 when all the graves were still intact starting from about 1800. The other source is a register of death of this crypt which contains data in chronological order from 1930. In addition to the history and present state of the crypt a register of the locally buried Carmelite monks has also been prepared based on the present epitaphs and the above-mentioned sources. Its importance lies in the fact that we have very little knowledge about the Carmelite monks who lived in the monastery in the last two centuries because of the lack of any closer studies and the monks’ secluded way of life. From the 1940s the old graves of the crypt have been terminated both in the Carmelite period and in the years when the church was managed by the Diocese. By now only some graves from the 19* century have remained and a lot of graves from the 20* century have also disappeared including three Prebends of Győr and a lot of laymen of local historical importance. The disappearance of the graves makes the study of the above-mentioned sources and the publication of its results very important from local historical point of view. Vilmos Tóth 196
