A BONE BUCKLE FROM AN AVAR AGE CEMETERY OF TÁP

A rare object came to light from the No. 343 grave of the Middle and Late Avar Age cemetery of Táp-Borbapuszta. This bone buckle is a unique find in the region. The present study describes the conditions of the finding, the group of finds, the chronology of the grave (the last third of the 7th century - the beginning of the 8th century) and the occurrences of the object type within the Carpathian Basin. With the exact typological description of the object having been seen as a piece of Eastern heritage it clears up some confusions of the literature, tries to solve the chronological inconsistency (up till now it has been known only from the Early Avar Age) and reviews its possible use (as it is considered to be a sling-buckle in Hungary and also in case of plentiful Asian parallels, but there are some exceptions).
