I J. ARRABONA 2013. 51.__________________________________________________TANULMÁNYOK “LET’S OBSERVE THE METEOROLOGICAL PHENOMENA” FLÓRIS RÖMER IN THE SERVICE OF THE METEOROLOGY The first meteorological station in Győr was officially established on 1st January 1885, but the observation of the meteorological events has a longer history. The “observation of the meteorological phenomena” was first initiated by Flóris Römer on 4th April 1858, when the well-known scientist issued a call in the periodical “Győri Közlöny” inciting the public of the city and the county to record precise meteorological observations and make prognosis for some days. Römer did not stop to emphasize that the observation of the natural elements was not only the pass-time of the scientists, since the meteorological events had a strong effect also on the development of the agriculture. Initially, Römer himself carried out the measurements in Győr, while from Pannonhalma Chrysostom Kruesz provided the data of observations. From 1859 Károly Wottitz took over keeping the observation diary in Győr. The observers recorded the temperature, the precipice and wind conditions in both places. They also offered special attention to keeping track of the changes of the air-pressure. This paper looks into the weather conditions in the middle of the 19th century and addresses the observations and prognosis made with elementary meteorological instruments. István Áldozó 62
