Prohászka Péter: Rómer Flóris és a budapesti VIII. Ősrégészeti és Embertani Kongresszus előkészületei

ARRABONA 2013. 51. TANULMÁNYOK FLÓRIS RÖMER AND THE PREPARATIONS OF THE 8th CONGRESS OF PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY OF BUDAPEST On 4th September 1876 Ágoston Trefort, the Minister of Religion and Education opened the first international event of the Hungarian archaeology, the 8th Congress of Prehistoric Archaeology and Anthropology of Budapest. In the 19th century the Congress of Prehistoric Archaeology and Anthropology (Congrés international d’anthropologie et d’archéologie Préhistoriques) which had been established in 1865, represented an international forum, where the experts could present their results and meet each-other, since, beside the professional and amateur archaeologists of the given country, experts from all over Europe and some from America also took part. During the congress the organizers showed the most important archaeological and anthropological finds, moreover, there were excursions to excavations as well. Several publications presented the most significant scientific results of the epoch. Römer first took part in the Paris congress in 1867, where he held a successful speech about the Palaeolithic age of Hungary. In 1874 at the Stockholm Congress he successfully persuaded the congress to elect Budapest with unanimous voting as the venue of the next congress. In the next two years he was busy with organizing the congress and the joint exhibition and carry out the necessary data and finds collection. With Ferenc Pulszky’s assistance he asked for help from private persons, museums and societies in two circular letters while the newspapers and the Archaeological Bulletin also reported about the events. Other sources of the organizing works are those letters, drawings and maps, which were sent to Budapest from all over the country. Römer and his colleges put an exhibition for the congress together, where their main aim was the introduction of the Palaeolithic finds of the Carpathian Basin arranged in 47 show-cases according to counties with the relevant maps and drawing shown opposite of them. The exposed objects came from the collections of the Hungarian National Museum, the county museums and private persons. The French language catalogue of the exhibition was prepared by József Hampel the price of which was included in the participation fee. Altogether some 120 Hungarian museums and private persons sent their objects to the exhibition including the most important amateur archaeologists and collectors of the era. Without their support the first international show of the Hungarian archaeology could not have been so successful. Péter Prohászka 114
