ARRABONA 2010. 48/2. TANULMÁNYOK WANDERING STUDENTS (PEREGRINI) FROM GYŐR AT GERMAN UNIVERSITIES 1694-1789 By the 18th century a wide and colourful university network developed in the territories outside the Habsburg rule of the Holy Roman Empire. Its members included old, traditional universities (i.e. Heidelberg, Leipzig, Jena) and enlightened colleges characterised by modern ways of thinking (i.e. Halle and later Gottingen). These institutions had strong appeal to the Hungarian students. For religious reasons mainly the Protestant students went to study in Germany. In Győr it was the Lutheran Grammar School, which operated until 1749, which sent the most students to Germany. Between 1694 and 1789 35 students from Győr registered 39 times into the registry books of different German universities. Complying with the general Hungarian trend most of them studied at the universities of Wittenbenrg, Jena, Halle and Göttingen which reflected their sensitivity to quality and receptiveness to the novelties. In general, about 4-6 students went abroad annually with a slight rise between 1780 and 1789. The Hungarian peregrini preferred the theological and the medical faculties. Some of them even acquired academic degrees. The study also provides detailed biographies of the most prominent students and a list of the peregrini from Győr. Attila Szilárd Tar
