Gabrieli Gabriella-Lőrincz Barnabás: The ala I Hispanorum Arvacorum Latest Relics from Levél (Győr-Moson-Sopron County) In 1995-1996 at the confines of the community Levél at the junction of the M1-M15 motorway 89 graves of ARoman cemetery was found. (Gabrieli 1997,49-50). In three graves Roman stone relics were found in secondary use, among these this study introduces a grave stele. Two fragments of the inscription made of limestone was excavated from grave 79 on 26 June 11196. Upper part of the stele is missing, only the inscription part remained unharmed. Both sides and bottom of the stele was decorated with vine-tendrils. (Hansági Múzeum, Mosonmagyaróvár Inv. 2000 1.3.) and 2000 1.2. The completed text is up (figure 1-4). Based on the vine-tendril decorations, ligatures and the Aelius gentilicum, it is sure, that both fragments belong to the same grave stele. According to the name and age of the released soldier, who was recruited to the ala I Hispanorum Arvacorum the earliest 113 and the latest 135, the inscription may be dated between 150-175. The cavalry soldier(rank is unknown) served in the Brigetio area in Kelamantia (Iza-leányvár) (Lőrincz 2001.20) and after his release he moved back to his home-village (Levél) (See in similar cases the soldier's diplomas: Roxan 1989,127-129 to the Pannonian Data: CIL XVI 31, RMD 152, CIL XVI 112 +RD p. 132-133, CIL CVI 178,96,104 (Figure 5.) However the stele was found in secondary use in a Late Roman grave, therefore it is possible, that it was raised in Levél. The stone relic mentions the name of the cavalry in the form of ala I Aravacorum(for the name of the troop see Table on page XXX) The following data are available regarding the names of the inscription.: AVITVS The name is very frequent in the Latin provinces of Europe - therefore in Pannónia - (OPEL I: 231-233) VERANVS. The died auxiliary soldier cognome is known in the Pannónia name (Mócsy 1983, 306, CIL III 3344,3410,4015 > 4017 > 14354 26> 15184 24,11223: Luco Vocontiorum, 1132 AE 1971,350, RIU 1091>1097). VINILLA. This female name has only appeared once in the Roman Empire (Mócsy 1983, 313 and CIL XIII 5431 (Germani aSuperior) Has benn unknown in Pannónia, yet. The inscription form Levél provides new date for the personnel staff of the ala I Hsipanorum Arvacorum (further persons: Lőrincz 2001.121,128,132-133, 136) and it is the latest stone relic in Pannónia. 130
