Gabler Denen STONE PLASTIC FINDS AT SCARBANTIA AND IN ITS SURROUNDINGS As a member of the research team which works on the corpus of the relics of Roman stone plastics like that of Esperandieu, the author describes the monuments at Sopron (Scarbantia) and its neigh bourhood. After an introductory survey of the history of research he presents 51 objects, among them also 4 hitherto unpublished specimens (nos 23, 27, 28, 29). First he describes the finds and the circumstances of their discovery, then he dates them and summarizes the essential literature regarding them. He arranges the material in the topographical order fixed by the CIL, proceeding roughly from the South to the North, however, the objects derived from the area of Scarbantia are given precedence. (Among them no. 15 has been brought to Sopron from Győr — Arrabona.) Tombstones which have no definite sites follow the Sopron, pieces, since a part of them may be of Scarbantian origin. Stone plastics from the area of today's Burgenland are mentioned only if they are preserved by a Hungarian museum. The material embraces only 5 round statues (nos 1—3, 36—38), the remaining pieces are altars, votive reliefs or grave steles. The round statues have a cultic character, presenting Jove, Juno and Minerva, members of the Capitol Sanctuary at Scarbantia. A reconstruction of the statues of the Capitol Triad, different from that given by K. Praschniker, is produced by the sculptor E. Szakái, serving as the model of this description Two reliefs with mythological scenes are presented, one of them portrays an unknown or hitherto unidentified legend (no. 10), the other shows Charon with two people in his boat (no. 30). No. 4 is a votive embossment devoted to Jove, nos 5, 6, 7—9 are similar ones offered to Isis, Silvanus and Nemesis, respectively. A decorated altar of Jove is known from Bük (no. 32), that of Silvanus from Sopronkőhida (no. 35), a Mithras tablet from Fertőrákos (no. 37) and an altar for Ceres from Pinnye (no. 42). The bulk is made up of grave plastics. Their majority belongs to the first century (nos 11, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 27, 33, 34, 36, 39, 40, 41, 43, 44, 45, 48, 49, 50, 51), portraying the veterans of the legio XV Apolinaris; they seem to have played an eminent role in the life of Scarbantia even before the town was given municipal rank in the Flavian period. Another part of the monuments was raised by the soldiers of the ala Gemelliana, the ala Scubulorum, the ala Hispanorum (not: Thracum), or the ala Pannoniorum, respectively. The top of the tombstones is partly semicircular (nos 19, 27, 41, 43, 45). partly tympanum56
