TÖRTÉNETTUDOMÁNY - Medgyesi Konstantin: A „demokrácia” mint fegyver a koalíciós évek makói közéleti küzdelmeiben
Konstantin Medgyesi Democracy” as a weapon in the political struggles of Makó during the Coalition Years „Democracy" as a weapon in the political struggles of Makó during the Coalition Years Konstantin Medgyesi In 1944, Makó was the "first liberated Hungarian town”, i.e. the events at Makó had greater significance, since the title of "liberated Hungarian town" had pronounced reference value. Due to onion cultivation, Makó had a unique social status between the two world wars and after 1944 as well. Ergo, civil liberties and individual autonomies were more prominent here: local social players already got used to the fact that democratic rights are forged from the complicated mass of various liberties. This event was interpreted by Marxist historians as Makó having a traditionally strong base for petty-bourgeois democracy. Makó, with its strong (petty-] bourgeois democratic traditions and existing labor movement traditions worked as a kind of democracy lab during the Coalition Years. After 1944 the town could experience democracy for 4 years, this period in Makó’s history was a period of hope for democracy. Our study explores the events, unique qualities, discourses and language policy struggler of this local democracy experiment. 180
