László Mód Grape Harvest Balls and Processions in Csongrád Grape Harvest Balls and Processions in Csongrád at the End of the 19th and Beginning of the 20th Centuries László Mód Present research aims at answering the question how grape harvest balls and processions, showing a rather unified picture throughout Hungary in the first half of the 20th century, appeared and became popular forms of entertaining in Csongrád. These festive events were organized in Csongrád, similarly to other neighbouring urbanized settlements (e.g. Kunszentmárton, Szentes) from the first half of the 1890s. They were usually closely connected to particular social groups and communities. These festivals separated from the actual activity of grape harvest both in time and place were held mostly in closed places, in restaurants or community buildings. It seems that grape harvest balls were mostly the festive events of craftsmen and middle class citizens, however, becoming popular also among farm dwelling communities from the beginning of the 1920s. Csongrád is no exception to this. 260
