The excavated area is on the right bank of the Tócó stream, on an elevation in a region once intersected by ancient watercourses. The excavation took place during the autumn of 2003 and the spring and summer of 2004 on a roughly 50 600 m2 large surface. Although we did expect a large site based on the find distributions from the survey, it turned out only during the course of the excavation that we are uncovering the cross- section of a whole Avar settlement and its cemetery. The excavated surface was located on a 1-1,5 meter high, 5-600 meter wide elevation that stretched for many kilometres in a north- south direction. It is not a surprise that in the area previously covered by water, this safer and drier part was chosen for settlement. (Beside the Avar village, remains of a Sarmatian settlement were discovered as well.) 108
