Kolozsi Barbara - Szabó László: An avar settlement on the periphery of Hortobágy
AVAR FALU A HORTOBÁGY HATÁRÁN After full excavation, the settlement could be divided into four, clearly separate areas. The village was bordered by its cemetery (altogether 224 graves) in the south. To the north from the cemetery, there was a 150 meter long area with only sporadic archaeological features, but intersected by ditches. The centre of the village was also ca 150 meter long. There were no ditches observable in this area, we excavated, however, larger groups of dwelling houses, outdoor ovens and wells. In the north, the settlement was surrounded by a complex, 360 meter long system of ditches with a few buildings scattered among them. When examining the village and the cemetery together, both the settlement structure and the finds seem to support their contemporaneity and close relationship. The material remains are typical for the 8th-9th century Avar population. By the 9th century, the collapse of Avar central power left a political vacuum in the Great Hungarian Plain. Between the Frank, Moravian and Bulghar empires, those Avar communities that had survived the wars were able to continue their life mostly unmolested. The small, fully self-sufficient villages provided continuity during the century until the Hungarian conquest.
