Tradition and Reality- Imre Czeglédi - Resume The author is a researcher of Mihály Munkácsy, originally Lieb, world famous Hungarian painter’s family and relatives. In this study, the author has analyzed the familial relationships with Munkácsy and the authenticity of the oral traditions. As to the descent of the Liebs, Munkácsy’s family, two versions have survived both in the family and literature: descent from Bavaria or Tyrol. The tradition of descent from Bavaria had been established on the basis of a written family history made in Hungary. The person latest entered into the list, György János Lieb, born in 1770, was assumed to “have been” a grandfather to Munkácsy. In the parish registers, in the person of Ignác Lieb, the author managed to find the real grandfather to Munkácsy. Already Walter Ilges, the son to Munkácsy’s sister, in his Munkácsy biography published in 1899, mentions the descent from Tyrol prevalent in the family. The tradition was, at more length, written by Valéria Tóth, Munkácsy’s aunt as an old woman, in Budapest Hírlap (Budapest News) in 1900, the year of Munkácsy’s death. According this theory, a presumed grandfather to Munkácsy - no name is mentioned, so the name is unknown as a civil engineer, immigrated 177
