GAZDASÁGTÖRTÉNET - Szulovszky János: Északkelet-Magyarország gazdasága a trianoni határok meghúzása idején

has survived. The officials compiling the document were concerned with presenting precise data on the consequences if the entire territory of County Gömör-Kishont, one of the three counties making up the chamber's territory, were to be annexed to another country. They emphasized that the Gömör region, "a treasury of the most diverse economic forces, is an enormous asset among the territories doomed to be torn away, whose loss would not only mutilate our chamber's territory, but would also cripple our homeland's machine industry, especially the iron and lumbering industry, which would lose its largest and most extensive iron producing region." It is noteworthy that the document points out that the mutilation of the chamber's territory is a model of what would befall historical Hungary if the new borders became a reality: "as the country's model in miniature, our chamber's district bears much resemblance to our homeland ... and the loss of County Gömör and its geological deposits to our chamber's district would, proportionately, be a loss of the same magnitude as the tearing away of the mountain regions to our country's plainlands." It seems likely that the document's authors did not really believe that the decision-makers would accept their arguments and would at least take cognizance of Hungarian interests in a few cases out of equitableness. In the introduction to the document, the authors declared that their "outcry" against the terms of the peace treaty was meant to be a demonstration. Even though the chamber's protest had no impact whatsoever, it is nonetheless an excellent document offering a fairly comprehensive and accurate picture of the economic conditions in Miskolc and the broader area, and illustrates the organic and diverse network of contacts disrupted by the country's new borders: in July 1921. 258 of the 280 settlements in County Gömör-Kishont were annexed to their new homeland.
