AN INSCRIBED COPPER VESSEL OF THE OTTOMAN PERIOD FROM KECSKEMÉT According to one of the records from 1897 among the documents of the municipal museum and library of Kecskemét in the Archives of County Bács-Kiskun, an inscribed Turkish copper vessel came to light in Arany János Street during construction work near the church (BKMÖL VIII.

703, 75-77). The vessel bore traces of black lacquer (weight 287 gr, diameter of mouth 14.5 cm, diameter of base 8 cm, volume 350 cc; Fig. J). A drawing of the vessel was sent to Ármin Vámbéry, according to whom the vessel was a sahan or lejen, inscribed with the following text: Sahib Ahmed Süvar tahi Jüsüf aga (Fig. 2). According to János Hornyik's monograph on the history of Kecskemét, the name Jusuf occurs in fifteen charters and other documents between 1670 and 1685, variously described as a road master and an aga. Vámbéry noted that the vessel had probably been made before 1685. Much of the Kecskemét museum's collection perished in the earlier 20th century and the vessel can no longer be found. László Simon
