Costumes

We have made a selection from the variations of folk costumes differing from region to region, having chosen from the garments of the main ethnographical and ethnical groups. We preferred those that have been in use in the recent past, or those that can be encountered even today. The basic elements of costumes can be seen in similar or identical forms in smaller or larger areas. Their composition makes up groups of costumes characteristic of certain regions, differing in each historical period. Hungarian costumes, part of the exhibition Almost nothing is known about the earliest period of Hungarian folk costumes. The few Finno-Ugrian words like öv (belt), szíj (strap), szalag (ribbon) do not tell much about the character of clothing. The number of these words increased during the contact with the Bulgar-Turks ( csat - clip, buckle, ködmön ­short leather jacket, bársony- velvet, gyöngy- pearl).
